Absolute Reign - Webtoon & Manhwa Recommendation

Today, I want to share my highly personal thoughts on a martial arts webtoon that seems to have a rather interesting reputation among readers: Absolute Reign (Korean title: 절대군림). In my honest opinion, while many readers in the comments section endlessly praise its artwork, I personally found it to be just a very average, middle-of-the-road experience. As a reader who read all the way to the latest chapter, I want to give you my transparent perspective on why it is hard for me to strongly recommend this series, despite some of its specific visual highlights.

Ratings

• Story: 2.5 / 5.0
• Art: 3.5 / 5.0
• Action and Directing: 2.5 / 5.0
• Recommendation: 2.5 / 5.0

What is Absolute Reign about? (Detailed Synopsis)

From my perspective, this story attempts to weave a grand narrative of growth, strategy, and survival in the chaotic world of Murim. The plot centers around a protagonist who initially appears underestimated or ordinary but harbors immense hidden potential and a sharp, calculating mind. Instead of simply rushing into battles, the narrative heavily focuses on his strategic maneuvering through the complex political power struggles between the Orthodox factions, the Unorthodox factions, and the hidden, sinister forces manipulating them from the shadows. While the premise of combining tactical intellect with martial arts growth sounds expansive on paper, exploring these traditional Murim conflicts and faction wars is the main driving force of the series.

Key Reasons to Read This Series

1. My Honest Thoughts on the Highly Praised Art

If you look at the comments section on NAVER WEBTOON, you will see a suspicious amount of overwhelming praise for the artwork. To share my most transparent opinion, I honestly found myself constantly questioning, "Is it really that good?" While there are occasionally some decent panels, I personally felt that the characters' faces often looked quite flat and plain. However, I completely acknowledge that art style is highly subjective, and my personal preference might just differ from the majority.

2. My Perspective on the Average Story and Skills

In my eyes, the biggest reason it is hard for me to strongly recommend this series is its overall averageness. Even though the synopsis involves grand political struggles and growth, I personally felt that both the actual execution of the storyline and the specific martial arts techniques used by the protagonist were incredibly plain. Even after reading all the available chapters up to the latest release, nothing truly stood out to me as unique, creative, or groundbreaking.

3. My Take on Its Value as a Time-Killer

Despite my strict criticisms, I do want to point out that it is not a terrible webtoon. There are certainly a few fun moments scattered throughout the chapters. However, my final conclusion is that it is simply an average, time-killing martial arts webtoon. If you have some free time and want to read something without overthinking it at all, it serves that basic purpose well enough in my opinion.

4. The One Unanimous Standout: The Protagonist's Mother

To end on a positive note, there is one thing I completely agree with the rest of the readers on. The artwork for the protagonist's mother is genuinely impressive! I personally found that her character design and visual representation were the true highlights of the series, drawing genuine admiration from almost everyone. Since you mentioned attaching it at the end, I am definitely looking forward to seeing that particular artwork!

Who is this recommended for?

My personal recommendation goes out to readers who are just looking for a simple, completely average martial arts story to kill some time. If you do not mind somewhat flat character designs for the most part and are simply curious to see the highly praised artwork of the protagonist's mother, I think you might enjoy skimming through this one!

Webtoon & Manhwa Recommendation
